Sweet Adventures is our “Flavor of the Month” caramel subscription. It’s an adventure because we don’t just send out just any flavor each month. We send out, in most cases, a flavor that we’ve never made before. If you’re the kind of person that enjoys trying new things, and you love caramels, then this subscription is for you!

This month, we made a new flavor: “Pear Williams”.

You’re probably wondering “what a Pear Wiliiams” is. We wondered the same thing once upon a time ago.

You probably know that during the holiday season we have a booth at the Old World Christmas Market, at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake, and also at the German Christmas Market in Oconomowoc. A number of years ago, when we started selling European candy in addition to our caramels, folks would occasionally ask us about liqueur-filled chocolates that are filled with pear brandy. They would ask if we could get those chocolates with that pear brandy in them. They would also recall that the bottle of pear brandy itself had an actual pear… a whole pear… in the bottle. That pear brandy is often named Pear Williams after the Williams Pear that it is made from. For Americans, the same pear is called the Bartlett Pear.

That triggered a memory of when I was a kid living across the street from my grandparent’s house. I recall that occasionally, when grandma and grandpa were entertaining relatives, they would bring out a bottle of liqueur that had a whole pear in the bottle. Then they would pour it into a small footed glass for each guest. Of course they would all drink it. It was a special treat.

Recently when were trying to come up with ideas for a new caramel flavor, we ran through of list of products that we had for sale this past holiday season, and remembered the Pear Williams filled chocolates and thought that a caramel that had the taste of pear brandy probably would be a favorite to many of our customer. Here it is, as part of Our Sweet Adventures Caramel Subscription.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering about how they get the whole pear into a bottle of Pear Williams, my understanding is that they place bottles over the blossoms on blooming pear trees, and allow them to stay there until a pear developes and matures. Then when the pears are ready to be picked, they harvest each bottle, with the pear inside.

Give our Pear Williams caramels a try. Share them with your older relatives and friends and see if they remember the pear brandy with the whole pear in each bottle.

We make our caramels in small batches. After pouring, and after the caramel hardens, we cut it, wrap it, and package it by hand in Kraft paper zipper pouches, with windows, to keep them fresh until you purchase them. All of our handcrafted caramels are made with real butter and heavy cream, to make them melt in your mouth.
